About half the builds I work in Arrington have construction material left in the soil, gravel and fill the graders covered over and never pulled back out. It is genuinely hit or miss lot to lot. Those homeowners tend to assume aeration is the cure, and I want to be precise here, because the answer is neither a clean yes nor a clean no.
Core aeration is the only practical way to relieve compaction without destroying the lawn to do it. Everything else that truly loosens soil, tillage or a full renovation, kills the grass on the way through. So when a lawn is actually compacted, cores are the right tool, and anybody telling you aeration does nothing for compaction is wrong.
The two honest qualifiers are density and duration. Research counts cultivation in cores per square foot, not in passes. K-State puts effective cultivation at 15 to 30 cores per square foot, and one pass with a commercial spoon aerator delivers roughly half of that or less, which is why a single annual pass produces no measurable compaction response at all. Two to three passes is what moves it. The frequency work agrees: going from one event a year to three cut soil bulk density 5 to 9 percent and surface hardness 5 to 19 percent. Duration is where Williamson County clay gets its vote. Our holes close in weeks. And genuinely destructive compaction is uncommon to start with, because root channels, soil biology, and Zone 6b to 7a freeze and thaw cycling work against it all winter. Real compaction is almost always something people did to the same footprint over and over. The rest is heavy clay behaving like heavy clay.
