About American Witch Hazel

American Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)

Common Witch Hazel, Fall-blooming Witch Hazel

Sun to light shade, moderately moist to well-drained, prefers rich organic soils but tolerates clay; moderately acid to neutral pH 5.5–7.0; moderate drought tolerance once established.

15–20 feet tall and wide in full canopy; as a landscape shrub typically pruned to 8–12 feet; blooms October–December with yellow, strap-petaled flowers after leaf drop — the only native shrub in Tennessee blooming in late fall through early winter; dehiscent seed capsules eject seed explosively at maturity.

Growth rate: slow to medium. Propagation: difficult from seed (double dormancy, 2-year germination); moderately difficult from softwood cuttings; grafted cultivars commercially available.

Native region: Native to Tennessee; common statewide in moist deciduous woodlands and stream margins, with lowest concentration in the western plains.

American witch hazel is the only native woody plant in Middle Tennessee to bloom reliably in November and December, making it a critical late-season nectar source for any insects active in warm fall spells. The fall-blooming habit is easily confused with Hamamelis vernalis (vernal witch hazel, which blooms January–March); purchase H. virginiana in fall to confirm bloom timing. The shrub-to-small-tree size requires siting with sufficient vertical clearance — foundation plantings at close range become problematic within a decade. Best used at the woodland edge or as a screening shrub in naturalistic designs. No significant pest problems affect established plants in Tennessee; witch hazel aphids (Hormaphis hamamelidis) produce cone-shaped leaf galls in spring but cause no long-term damage.
