About Threadleaf Coreopsis

Threadleaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis verticillata)

Thread-leaf Tickseed, Whorled Tickseed

Part sun, medium to moderately dry moisture level, sandy or rocky soil; slightly acid pH; tolerates clay loam if drainage is adequate; full sun increases flower density.

30–60 cm tall; blooms early summer through August with bright yellow daisy-like flowers; spreads by rhizomes and self-seeding to form expanding colonies.

Germination Code: A. Division in spring or fall is the preferred propagation method; stem cuttings root readily in early summer.

Native region: Native to Middle and East Tennessee; recorded in scattered woodland edge and open sites across the state.

One of the most reliably drought-tolerant native groundcovers for full to part sun in Middle Tennessee. The fine-textured, thread-like foliage sets it apart visually from coarser perennials and remains attractive even after deadheading. Shear plants by half in mid-July to encourage a second flush of bloom in September. In heavier clay soils common in the Columbia and Lewisburg areas, avoid overwatering in establishment — this species tolerates drought far better than standing moisture. Butterflies and native bees work the flowers heavily. Cultivars including 'Moonbeam' (pale yellow) and 'Zagreb' (compact, golden) are widely available and perform reliably in Zone 6b/7a.
