Nimblewill (Muhlenbergia schreberi) — weed in Middle Tennessee

About Nimblewill

Nimblewill (Muhlenbergia schreberi) is the shade-dwelling doppelganger of Bermuda grass. It has a very similar fine-textured leaf pattern and grayish-green color, and homeowners frequently mistake it for Bermuda that has somehow gotten into a shaded area of their yard. The critical distinction is habitat: Bermuda grass only grows in full sun and cannot tolerate shade. Nimblewill only grows in shade and needs consistent moisture. If you see what looks like Bermuda in a shaded spot, it is almost certainly nimblewill. Another quick field test: try pulling it out of the ground. Nimblewill has an extremely shallow, minimal root system — it pulls up easily with almost no resistance. Bermuda grass, by contrast, is deeply rhizomatous and fights hard against being pulled. Nimblewill is a warm-season perennial that comes out of dormancy late in spring (later than fescue) and goes dormant early in fall, leaving brown patches in an otherwise green fescue lawn during the transition seasons. This seasonal mismatch is often the most bothersome visual aspect for homeowners. Control follows the same approach as other perennial weeds: the late-summer and early-fall treatment window is the most effective time to hit it while it is translocating resources into its root system. For small infestations, hand-pulling works because the root system is so minimal. For larger infestations, mechanical glyphosate application (gel stick, paintbrush) to individual patches avoids broadcast damage to surrounding fescue. Addressing the underlying shade and moisture conditions also helps long-term — if you can increase light penetration through tree canopy pruning, nimblewill loses its competitive advantage.
