The biggest mistake I see in Columbia is people trying to fix a thin lawn with cheap, big-box store seed or old Kentucky 31 fescue. K-31 is outdated technology. It is wide-bladed, sharp to walk on, and lacks the disease resistance needed for our humidity. Worse, cheap seed is often contaminated with things like dallisgrass or johnson grass. Dallisgrass is a nightmare that can take me three to five years to kill because it is so similar to fescue.

Even though it is a small amount by weight, it makes up about 35% of the plant count. This allows your lawn to self-repair divots and creates a disease firebreak to stop fungal spread. We need to get this seed in the ground in late August or September. If we wait for "perfect" weather, the seed won't have enough time to establish before the heat or frost hits.
