Poa Annua / Annual Bluegrass

Poa annua

Poa annua, commonly known as annual bluegrass, is one of the most widespread and frustrating grassy weeds in the world. It is a winter annual that germinates in the late summer and early fall as soil temperatures begin to drop. It grows vigorously through the winter and early spring, forming unsightly, light-green clumps that stand out starkly against the darker green of a healthy tall fescue lawn.

The most frustrating aspect of Poa annua is its prolific seed production. In early spring, it produces hundreds of white seed heads, even when mowed extremely short. These seed heads give the lawn a patchy, white appearance. As the heat of summer arrives, the Poa annua dies off completely, leaving behind ugly brown dead patches and thousands of seeds waiting for the fall.

How to Identify Poa Annua / Annual Bluegrass

  • 1Color is noticeably lighter, almost apple-green, compared to tall fescue.
  • 2Grows in distinct clumps.
  • 3Produces abundant, small, whitish-green seed heads in the spring, even at low mowing heights.
  • 4Leaves have a distinct "boat-shaped" tip.

Treatment & Control

Because Poa annua is a grass, it cannot be killed with standard broadleaf weed controls without also killing your fescue. Therefore, prevention is the only truly effective strategy. This requires a highly precise application of a pre-emergent herbicide in the late summer or early fall, right before the soil temperatures drop into the germination zone. Timing is incredibly critical; if applied too late, the Poa annua will already have germinated and will plague the lawn until the following summer.
