Lawn Disease & Fungus Control

Protect your Middle Tennessee fescue lawn from brown patch, dollar spot, red thread, and other summer lawn diseases with our preventive fungicide programs — timed to a strict 28-day cycle and included in every service plan.

Lawn Disease & Fungus Control - Mr. Lawn Care

Brown patch (Rhizoctonia solani), dollar spot, and red thread are the most destructive fungal diseases for fescue lawns in Middle Tennessee. Our hot, humid summers, combined with heavy evening dew that keeps the grass canopy wet for hours, create the perfect environment for these pathogens to thrive. Without professional lawn disease control, a healthy fescue lawn can be severely damaged or killed in a matter of days during a major fungal outbreak.

Our Lawn Disease & Fungus Control program focuses heavily on prevention. Following UT Extension recommendations, we begin our preventive fungicide applications in late May, before the first major heat wave hits. These treatments create a protective barrier on the grass blades, stopping fungal spores from penetrating the plant tissue. For lawns already showing signs of infection, we also provide rapid-response curative treatments to halt the spread of the disease.

Beyond chemical treatments, we provide essential cultural practice recommendations to help manage disease pressure. Proper mowing height, correct watering schedules (deep and infrequent, never in the evening), and careful nitrogen management during the summer are all critical components of a comprehensive disease management strategy.

Why This Matters in Middle Tennessee

Middle Tennessee's transition zone climate—characterized by hot, humid summers and heavy overnight dew—creates extreme fungal pressure for cool-season grasses like fescue. Brown patch thrives in these exact conditions. A preventive fungicide program is not a luxury here; it is a necessity for maintaining a thick, healthy fescue lawn through the summer months.

Disease Control FAQ

How do I identify brown patch in my lawn?

Brown patch typically appears as roughly circular patches of brown, thinning grass ranging from a few inches to several feet in diameter. In the early morning while dew is still present, you may see a dark, purplish "smoke ring" around the outer edge of the patch where the fungus is actively spreading.

Is it better to use preventive or curative fungicide?

Preventive is always better. Preventive treatments protect the grass blade before the fungus can penetrate and cause damage. Curative treatments can stop an active infection from spreading, but they cannot heal the grass that is already dead—that grass will need to recover or be overseeded in the fall.

How does watering affect lawn fungus?

Watering habits play a massive role in disease pressure. You should only water deeply and infrequently, and always in the early morning (between 4 AM and 8 AM). Watering in the evening or overnight keeps the grass blades wet for too long, creating the perfect environment for fungal spores to germinate.

How long does it take for the lawn to recover from fungus damage?

If the disease was stopped early and the crown of the grass plant survived, the fescue may recover when cooler weather returns in the fall. However, severe brown patch infections often kill the plant entirely, requiring core aeration and overseeding in September to restore the bare areas.
