If your lawn is thinning or showing patches of bare dirt, the instinct is often to grab a bag of cheap fescue from a big box store and wait until October to spread it. That is a mistake that will cost you years of frustration. Most retail blends use Kentucky 31, which is outdated technology. Even worse, cheap seed is frequently contaminated with Dallisgrass or Johnson grass. I solve this by using Sod Quality Certified Seed, also known as Gold Tag seed. This is a much higher standard than what you find at a garden center. It undergoes rigorous third party inspections and has zero tolerance for noxious weeds. I select a specific blend based on NTEP trial data from land grant universities, choosing cultivars that thrive through the spring green-up, summer heat, and fall transition. My blend is 90% turf-type tall fescue and 10% Kentucky bluegrass. That small amount of bluegrass acts as a biological firebreak against fungal diseases and allows the lawn to self-repair divots naturally. I schedule my seeding for late August or September to ensure the seed germinates before the window closes.
