Grubs are pests that eat your lawn from the bottom up by destroying the root system. When those roots are gone, your grass can't take up water or nutrients, leaving it vulnerable to the heat and drought stress we deal with here in Columbia. This is especially critical now with the recent city council news regarding the significant water rate increases. A lawn with a healthy root system uses water much more efficiently.

I also keep a close eye on armyworms. These are much more dramatic. Every few years, moths migrate north and create a perfect storm for an infestation. I've seen entire lawns eaten overnight; the larvae are so numerous that the ground actually looks like it is moving. They usually start along your shrub lines and move outward at an incredible pace.

My approach is preventative. I use a novel chemistry that controls both armyworms and grubs at the same time. This treatment is bee-safe and because the mode of action is so unique, insects cannot develop a resistance to it. I apply this as part of my standard plan before you see any visible damage. If you wait until you see the grass dying, the grubs are often too far along in their life cycle for safe chemistry, and we'd have to use harsher products like Dylox. I prefer to stop the problem before it starts.
