The occurrence of the silk tents may be associat- ed with the gradual loss of fo- liage, branch dieback, or thin- ning crowns. The tents are formed in early spring as soon as the leaves begin to emerge (Figure 6). The caterpillar (lar- vae) uses the tent as a place to hide and for protection from predation.
