Lawn Care and Aeration - Seeding

What is Sod Quality Seed?

Sod Quality Seeding is what sod farms use to grow their grass.

Sod Quality standards prohibit, by law, problematic weeds and other crop and weed contaminants that are otherwise allowable in certified (blue label) seed and lower. Sod quality seed is not readily available to homeowners through retail outlets, and it's generally not used in the landscape industry because it costs more than commercial grade seed and exceeds typical quality requirements.

The Sod Quality standard is meant to provide assurance to sod growers that the seed they plant will not contaminate their fields with noxious weeds, as well as common weed and crop contamination. But we think you should have the same assurance..

The extra cost is well worth it, and will save you time, money, and trouble in the long run.

There's one more important thing you should know about: "Pure Live Seed."

Pure Live Seed (PLS)

Why our sod quality seed is the smart Investment

"Pure Live Seed (PLS)" is a measure of the minimum % of seed that is required to germinate. In Oregon, where most tall fescue is grown, the law requires that sod quality seed meet a minimum PLS of 83.7%, with some tolerance for weed and other crop seeds.

Our seed exceeds those standards substantially!

PLS = 94.5%
Other Crop Seeds: 0%
Weed Seeds: 0%
Noxious Weeds: 0%

And here's an example of a professional high-end industry standard seed:

PLS = 88.99
Other Crop Seeds: 02%
Weed Seeds: 01%
Noxious Weeds: 0%

Unfortunately, it's more likely that you're getting a PLS drastically below what's shown here.

The single most important investment you can make in ensuring high quality turf is high quality seed. The next thing you want to do is to make sure your soil is optimized for your seed.

Our sod quality seed is as good as it gets!

Why Core Aerate when seeding?

Improved Seed to Soil Contact

The main benefit of core aeration is to improve seed to soil contact by increasing the surface area and penetration of the seed. Core aeration involves pulling small plugs of thatch and soil from the lawn with a machine. This mechanical method of extracting cores aerates the soil immediately and has the secondary benefit of improved penetration of air, water, and nutrients into the root zone.

Aeration and Seeding takes place in the late summer through early fall, and ensures that the seed has plenty of time to germinate and establish a substantial root system going into winter. We also offer spring aeration, without seeding, in our diamond plan as part of our spring rejuvination and summer stress prevention treatment.
